Description
INTRODUCTION Finding good social workers to supervise first practicum social work students is becoming more difficult for Australian schools of social work (Camilleri 2001). Over the last eight or so years government cuts to health and welfare agencies have increased the work stress on many Australian social workers. It is therefore not surprising that many social workers are finding it more difficult to deal with the responsibilities of supervising a social work student and the increasing demands of a busy job (Knight 2001). In 1998, focus groups were held with Sydney hospital social workers (front line and middle management) to explore this trend and the changing work pressures (Heycox, Hughes, Duffy and Studdy 1999). Although some teaching hospitals insist that social workers will supervise students as part of their employment contract which ensures some continued support for practicum from the field, many agencies agree to supervise students only as time permits.
